On Saturday, two Iranian Navy vessels passed through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea. The ships were an Iranian destroyer and a supply ship. The new Egyptian military leaders allowed the Iranians to pass without conflict.
This was the second time the Iranians have moved navy vessels through the Suez Canal since 1979. A year ago Iran sent ships into the Suez Canal amidst strong protest of Israel. Israel issued strong public protest to this entry as well.
Iran only has one nation in the Mediterranean who has a standing naval agreement-Syria. Both ships were observed moving towards one of Syria's ports on Saturday..
Questions have been raised on two fronts: 1) Is this a provocative move to incite the Israeli's into war? And, 2) Is Iran providing military arms to Syria to further battle the ongoing rebel uprising?
